Muscular System of Aurelia aurita
Aurelia Aurita, known as the Common Jellyfish, Saucer Jellyfish, and the Moon Jellyfish, is a member of the Cnidaria Phylum. It is most often found in the tropics and also lives in the Atlantic, Pacific, and Indian Oceans.
To swim Aurelia Aurita brings its bell shaped top together and then pushes it back up. This allows the jellyfish to go upwards and stay near the ocean's surface. This movement also allows the muscular tentacles to move around and possibly capture food in a larger area. This movement of the jellyfish is known as an pulsation. Pulsations are controlled by a ring of think tissue known as the coronal muscle.
This video shows what a jellyfish's pulsations look like.
